How To Start Fly Fishing.

Learning to fly fish is daunting.

It's difficult to know what to use, where to go and who to listen to. It may also seem expensive and inaccessible, the reality couldn't be further from the truth. Here is our suggested pathway into the sport.

Step 1 - Determine the type of fly fishing you want to do. As a sport fly fishing has many branches. In the UK these include. River Trout and Grayling, River Coarse Fish, Small Stillwater Trout, Large Stillwater Trout, River Salmon and Sea Trout. We suggest the fly fishing discipline you focus on initially is the one most accessible to you. For example, we live in North Yorkshire surrounded by River Trout and Grayling fishing so that's what we do. Find out how we find fishing locations here.

Step 2 - Join your local fly fishing club. They will be incredibly welcoming and will go above and beyond to help you take up the sport. If you don't have a local club, or don't think it's your kind of thing, then find out how to find a mentor here.

Step 3 - Once you have determined the type of fishing you want to do. You can then think about the equipment you will need to practise it. Find our simple equipment list here.

Step 4 - When it comes to learning how to cast and practise the sport we suggest you get help. It's not an easy thing to do and you will learn a lot faster and better by enlisting some help. Here you have two options, you can get professional help from a coach or guide (if you are in Yorkshire give us a shout), or you can find a mentor. Read our guide to finding a fly fishing mentor here.

Also, avoid Facebook. There are many fly fishing groups on there. Whilst providing a great place for experienced anglers to debate tactics and equipment. As someone coming into the sport, any questions you ask will receive about 50 conflicting responses. It will likely do more harm than good.

Step 5 - Hit the water and enjoy. Fly fishing is a special learning experience that never really ends. You have an exciting path ahead of you. If you need any help just give us a shout.

Tighlintes and good luck!
