    sustainability

    Limited production

We feel responsible for everything we put out into the world. To make sure we keep our impact as low as possible we only make 25 bags a week.

    Materials

Our hardwearing, weatherproof, GOTS certified organic dry-waxed cotton uses 88% less water and 62% less energy than conventional cotton. It also uses zero toxic chemicals in its production.

This bag is almost plastic-free (we use a recycled polyester thread)

    Offsetting

    7 trees planted + 20kg CO2e offset

    BearReMade

Our bags are made to last a lifetime, but we get that not everyone wants to keep something that long.

To avoid your bag ending up in the back of the closet, or worse, the bin, we will take your bag back in exchange for BearMade credit (10% of the bags original value).

We will then recycle the parts from that bag and make it into something new.

    material highlights

Our bags are made from GOTS certified organic dry-waxed cotton canvas from British Millerain in Lancashire. They have been dyeing and proofing cotton for over 100 years and this material is one of their latest creations. It has a totally dry finish (dry-waxed doesn't always mean totally), is waterproof, PFC free, and is machine washable! However, we don't recommend you wash it often.

    the AustriAlpin Cobra buckle

The AustriAlpin Cobra buckle. Normally used on climbing equipment to save lives, this buckle can take the weight of a small elephant. Yes, it's overkill for a bag, but when you hear the sound it makes you will understand why we chose it.

    notes from the designer

This bag was designed with the help of one of our customers. He wanted a bag that would be perfect for commuting or short trips away. He loved our Gouthwaite but wanted something a bit bigger, with more organisation and the option to carry the bag by hand. So after a couple of months, more than 40 emails, and a number of zoom calls, we had a bag. A pretty awesome one.

We were able to add all the new features and maintain the clean look and core design of our best-selling Gouthwaite backpack.

We loved it, our customer loved it, and everyone we showed it to loved it as well. So it didn’t take long for us to decide that we should put the bag into production.

    our impact

We feel personally responsible for the things we put out into the world and believe business should be a force for good.

to keep our impact low we:

    → Only make 25 bags a week
→ Will repair your bag for life
→ Will recycle your bag at the end of its life
→ Carbon offset all that we make and do. We plant trees locally (we actually plant
them) and in places where they will have a big impact with the help of Ecologi.

    the wildish club

    Like Cubs, but for everyone.

With every bag we sell we commit to helping one person get outdoors. We do this through The Wildish club.

    faq's

Do you really only make 25 bags a week?

We sure do! 25 bags is our maximum capacity and we have no interest in making more than that. It means we can take great care over every detail in all stages of production.

Think 25 bags sounds like a lot? It's not. Rolls Royce actually make over 60 cars per week.

What can I fit in this bag?

This is a hard question to answer as so many things are different shapes and sizes. However, for city use we typically take a 16" or 14" laptop and/or tablet, a large pair of headphones, a magazine, a book/notebook a jumper, a jacket and a bottle of water. There's also enough space for your gym kit or a full change of clothes if you cycle to work.

For outdoor use we would typically take a jacket, a jumper, a water bottle, a small first aid kit, some snacks, a small stove, kettle and mugs.

In both these scenarios we would still have plenty of space left in the bag.

We also regularly use this bag for long weekends away.

    Are your bags waterproof?

Our bags are not totally waterproof, very few are. But they are pretty damn close. We spent an hour throwing them around in a waterfall and water only got in when we forgot to roll the top down....

    Can I customise this bag?

Sometimes we can, sometimes we can't. It depends on the product. If you want to know more, send us an email and let us know what product you would like to personalise, along with what sort of personalisation you would like.

What a great bag!! And a great company ethos

Hi there i was looking a for a bag that would last me years as im trying to move away from a A"fast fashion buy every year" culture and i think i found it with bearmade

As a brtiish expat permatnently living in Australia i wanted a bag that I could use on my long commute to work , something i could store my laptop and also my gym kit and other tech devices. In addition i wanted wanted something that was comfortable to carry around and that could also be used as a weekend bag for short trips. This bag ticks all these boxes and more you can see straight away the attention to detail and the care takeen to make the bag and i absolutley love the ethos behind the company i have a soft spot for support small companies trying to do something better for the world and bearmade is one of these.
Some will say the bag is pricier than others , yes it may be but you are paying for quality , a good cause and a bag that will last you years. Can you say the same for a $3000 LV bag?
    Well done BearMade !!

    Just wow!

I have been eyeing up the gouthwaite for some time and saw what a great ethos Oscar and nell have with BearMade. Being a big guy I was waiting for a slightly larger bag and boom, the Jorvik was released!
Receiving the parcel today was like Christmas and birthday rolled into one. A beautiful handwritten card and an amazing print was the first welcoming sight, then the bag! Anyone who buys one of these bags will feel they could climb Everest, navigate the Amazon and trek across the Sahara. The cobra buckle sounds stunning, the craftwomanship behind the bag is a sight to behold, Amy is a master! The materials, aesthetics and general feel of the Jorvik has made my year in February. Thank you very much and you’ve got a customer for life.

It was a pleasure co-creating the additional features for the Jorvik with Oscar and Team! I use it almost everyday and sits besides me when working at home. After a few months I’m happy to confirm I’ve managed a few overnight trips with it and it achieves all of the objectives I’d hoped for! I’m grateful to Oscar for persevering with my fussiness and think together we’ve achieved a solid evolution of the Gouthwaite. Very pleased also that my naming suggestion made it though the vote being a native of God’s Own. I’m looking forward to enjoying many years (decades?!) of tough use for work and family trips. Best wishes, James
